Why London Open Matters
The London open trading strategy targets the most predictable 90-minute window in the forex market — 8am to 9:30am GMT — when institutional order flow creates directional moves that retail traders can follow. The foreign exchange market is a 24-hour market, but it is not equally liquid or directional across all 24 hours. Volume is concentrated in three session windows: Tokyo (midnight to 8am GMT), London (8am to 4pm GMT), and New York (1pm to 10pm GMT). London is the largest of the three by volume. When London opens, European institutional traders, banks, and hedge funds begin executing orders that have accumulated overnight — this creates the directional moves and volatility that make the first 90 minutes of London the most consistently tradeable window in the market.
The Asian Range
The London open setup begins with the Asian session. During the Tokyo hours (midnight to 8am GMT), the major currency pairs — EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY — often trade in a relatively narrow range as lower volume limits directional momentum. This range is identifiable on the chart and serves as the reference point for the London open trade. Mark the high and low of the Asian session on your chart before London opens. The London session frequently opens by breaking one side of this range — which is the initial directional signal for the session.
The London Open Sweep
The most reliable London open pattern is the sweep: London opens, price breaks one side of the Asian range (triggering stop orders from Asian session traders), then reverses and breaks the opposite side with momentum. This is a liquidity sweep at the session level. The sweep side (the false break) tells you where the stop orders were. The reversal direction tells you where institutional order flow is actually going. Entry: when price breaks back through the Asian session midpoint after the sweep. Stop: beyond the sweep extreme. Target: the opposite side of the Asian range, then the next structural level.
Time Is the Filter
The London open setup only works in the first 90 minutes of the London session — from 8am to 9:30am GMT (12pm to 1:30pm Dubai time). After this window, the pattern degrades as the initial institutional order flow has been absorbed and price enters a more random phase before the New York open at 1pm GMT creates the next directional catalyst. Trading outside this window using the same setup produces significantly worse results. Time filtering is one of the most underused risk reduction tools in retail trading — the same setup with the same rules produces different expectancy in different time windows.
