What Confluence Means
Confluence trading — entering positions only when multiple independent factors align at the same price at the same time — is the single most effective way to improve your win rate without changing your strategy. The key word is independent — factors that are derived from each other do not count as separate confluence. The key word is independent — factors that are derived from each other do not count as separate confluence. RSI and Stochastic both showing oversold is not confluence — they are both momentum oscillators that respond to the same price data. A Daily support level coinciding with a Fibonacci retracement level and a bullish RSI divergence on the 4H is genuine confluence — three independent types of analysis (price structure, mathematical retracement, and momentum) pointing to the same conclusion at the same price.
Building a Confluence Checklist
Before entering any trade, work through a checklist of factors. Structure: Is there a key support or resistance level here from the Daily or Weekly chart? Is this a previous high or low, a round number, or a range boundary? Institutional levels: Is there an order block or a previous liquidity sweep level nearby? Momentum: Does RSI show divergence on the trading timeframe? Is MACD histogram showing fading momentum in the opposing direction? Fibonacci: Does this level align with a 38.2%, 50%, or 61.8% retracement of a significant move? Session timing: Does this setup align with the London or New York open window? Each item that checks out is one point of confluence. A trade with four or five confluence factors is categorically different from a trade with one.
Minimum Confluence Threshold
Set a minimum threshold of confluence before entering any trade. A practical starting point: require at least three independent confluence factors before entering. If you can only find two, pass on the trade. This feels painful — you will miss trades. But the trades you miss when below threshold are precisely the marginal trades that account for most of your losses. A trader who only takes three-confluence setups will trade less frequently, but the results over 100 trades will be dramatically better than a trader who takes every setup that "looks good." Frequency of trading is not a virtue. Selectivity is.
Confluence and Position Sizing Together
Confluence does not just improve your win rate — it justifies scaling your position size. A setup with two confluence factors: standard size (1% risk). A setup with three confluence factors: standard size. A setup with four or five confluence factors: larger size (1.5–2% risk). This asymmetric sizing means your highest-conviction trades contribute most to your profitability. Over a trading career, this compounding effect of trading larger on better setups and smaller on marginal ones produces dramatically better results than flat-sizing every trade regardless of quality. Confluence is the framework that makes rational position scaling possible.
